Painting & Drawing - Outside the Box

Explore materials and processes in painting and drawing both traditional and experimental. Creating abstracts, still-lifes, or whatever you like in various media such as acrylic paint, oil sticks for boldness and richness, metallic papers, old maps and books, found objects, garbage bags for a contemporary sleekness, pencils for simplicity and naivete, etc. to expand and contemporize your creation. Strong emphasis on composition as well. Bring to class: materials list supplied at registration.

Painting on Slate

Linda will guide you as you create a beautiful painted slate picture. Get creative and paint flowers, birds or anything that captures your imagination. Material fee will cover all the supplies you need. Class size limited to 12.

Paper Quilling (or paper filigree)

Learn this art form which involves rolling narrow strips of pre-cut quilling paper around a quilling tool. Make coils or scrolls and pinch, arrange and glue them together to form elegant filigree. The paper is then looped, curled, twisted and otherwise manipulated to create shapes which make up designs to decorate.

Portfolio Review for the Fine Arts

Calendar Apr 2, 2018 at 6 pm, runs for 5 weeks

Initially Bess will lead the group to discuss each artist's goals with his/her work and career. Further discussion and critique of each artist's work will follow with focus on strengths and weaknesses in the work and possible ways of developing those strengths. Bring five pieces of recent, related work, including work that is unfinished or in the “reject pile,” the good, the bad and the ugly. Homework is a must to show artist's development each week and get further feedback on it. If the artist is interested in exhibiting and/or selling, we will also discuss what those possibilities might be and how to pursue these objectives.There may be some class work involving making simple diagrams or sketches that would require small sketchbook and pencils.

Makes a great holiday centerpiece! Use your imagination to create a whimsical miniature indoor garden. Design your garden in your favorite theme by making a natural woodland house with gemstones, moss, plants, creatures, fairies, or frogs. Over age 8 welcome with parent or guardian.

The Art of the Book

In this class, students will create 4 book structures: a simple pamphlet book, a Japanese Stab Bound book, a hard cover accordion book, and a hard cover book with signatures sewn on tapes. Class will focus on the techniques, structures, tools, materials and processes.
