Beginning Conversational Italian
with Christine Friese

Learn the basics of the language with a view to travel and simple conversations. Assumes no previous study of the language. Suggested but not required: The New Italian Project. We will cover the first 5 units, referred to as 1A in some of the book versions. Alternatively Nuovissimo Progetto Italiano 1 libro dello studente which is the Italian only version I will be using for teaching but it is more expensive. Class meets at the Kittery Community Center.

How to Write Scenes that Grip Your Reader and Keep them Turning the Page

A scene is a building block of your story, and its purpose is to advance the plot while also showcasing characters involved in a definitive point of tension that challenges them externally as well as internally. In this hands-on writing workshop, you’ll learn how to construct a scene that deeply engages the reader with the story so that they want to know what happens next (i.e. Keep Turning the Page).
For fiction and memoir writers. All participants will be expected to submit at least 10 pages of a work-in-progress that will be workshopped by all members of the class. All genres are accepted, but please don’t submit offensive material. If you have questions about this, you can email the instructor. Max 6 students.

The Art of Songwriting

During this course, you will explore the creative process of songwriting as you join Theresa Kipp, accomplished singer/songwriter, in the "How To's" of crafting original songs. You will examine your creative potential as we touch upon techniques for developing song structure, writing song lyrics, creating melody and harmony, and applying the principles of rhythm. You are guaranteed a fun, lighthearted, creative experience.

Are you still getting to know your digital camera and its features? Here’s an opportunity to learn from an expert in this seminar for beginners. Have your camera ready and learn when and how to use its special features; such as program mode, manual mode, aperture priority and shutter priority. Also, covered will be basic composition and best use of light for different situations, such as plant, people, macro, and landscape photography. This is a 5-week series covering multiple subjects with assignments and sharing of all students' work.

Learn to play the ukulele! It has never been more popular and you don’t even have to know how to read music! On the uke you can knock out folk music, rock, blues, jazz, pop, country, tunes old and new -- even classical music. Duncan Perry, who has taught more than 700 students of all ages, will introduce you to essential chords and playing techniques using commonly known songs. You will need a playable ukulele and an electronic tuner or a tuner app. If you don’t own a ukulele, please contact us for information.
