A Paddler's Guide to Safety

For a fun and safe summer on the water!  “A Paddler’s Guide to Safety” is a two night, four hour course designed for beginner, novice, and occasional paddlers.  From trip planning to on the water safety, this course will help you learn more about having the right paddle craft and equipment for the conditions.  Instructor Mike Moloney from the US Coast Guard Auxiliary has almost 40 years of kayaking experience, and will help you make better decisions about where to go, when to go, and what to bring with you!  This is virtual only. Knowledge and skill development in digital literacy and IT support: including hardware and software, troubleshooting, operating systems, and communication and procedure. Participants earn two industry certifications: IC3® & CompTIA® A+. You will be prepared for employment as a computer user support specialist/help desk technician.

To qualify for the FREE program, you must be:

A resident of Maine

Ages 17-29

Not enrolled in High School

Unemployed or underemployed

Authorized to work in the U.S.

 

Classes are online with live instructors March 2, 2021- June 3, 2021, Tuesday and Thursday 5:00pm-8:00pm and Wednesday 5:00pm-6:00pm. Contact us to complete the required orientation and assessments before the class.

Suddenly in Command

The captain becomes incapacitated or falls overboard, and you are suddenly in command. This boating safety primer is for those not generally at the helm and will help you to be prepared with the basics in case of an emergency. You will learn about your vessel, nomenclature, and operating principles such as starting the engine, basic boat handling, your on-board equipment, and how to minimize boating mishaps. This course is a must for family members in case something happens to the boat operator. Class taught through Zoom.

Reading Nautical Charts

Do you know how to read and understand a nautical chart? Nautical charts give us the "landmarks of the sea" – buoys, markers, shoreline features, water depth, boom type, and the latitude and longitude of these features. By knowing our latitude and longitude, we can locate our position anywhere on earth.  Charts warn us of dangerous areas and enable us to determine safe passage – if we know how to read the chart and use the information that we find on them. FREE Behavior Health Professional Certification Training

Our community is looking for individuals who want to make a difference in a child’s life. Children’s Behavioral Health Services are vital to Maine’s children with Intellectual Disabilities, Autism and Mental Health Disorders and their families. And the need in our area is great!

As an integral part of the child’s treatment team, a Certified Behavioral Health Professional (BHP) has the opportunity to make an immediate impact while helping a child grow and develop to their full potential. We are excited to connect our community to this wonderful FREE ONLINE training program.

The online training will equip you to help children who are receiving Behavior Health services. The training will prepare you for employment through local social services agencies. The program can be started at any time and finished at your own pace. You will complete 12 online modules then 3 4-hour live sessions, including the new ethics and boundaries training. 

Once the modules are completed, you will receive free online blood borne pathogen training and virtual First Aid & CPR training if you do not already possess those certifications. The entire training requirements will take about 45 hours. Any individual who will be 18 years of age or older upon completion of course may register.

Linda Greer, the Director of Marshwood and Kittery Adult Education will advise and support students on their training journey. Linda has expertise in the BHP field.
