Sgrafitto Plate (Beginner) – Pottery Hand Building techniques

Sgraffito (in Italian "to scratch") is a decorating pottery technique produced by applying layers of color or colors (underglazes or colored slips) to leather hard pottery and then scratching off parts of the layer(s) to create contrasting images, patterns and texture and reveal the clay color underneath. Lessons include hand-building techniques. Limit 6.

How to Pressure Can

Ever wonder how to safely preserve all those fresh garden vegetables? This hands-on food preservation workshop taught by UMaine Extension volunteers and staff will teach you the basic steps for pressure canning. Participants will receive a "Preserving the Harvest" food preservation packet, and will learn recommended methods for preserving foods, the latest and safest recipes, about equipment to ensure safety, and how to check for properly sealed jars. Please bring a potholder with you to the workshop.

Goat Milk Soap Making

In this class, you learn the basics of cold process soap making and learn how to integrate goats milk and honey into your soap making. The class will make a batch of honey and goats milk soap. Students will each leave the class with 2 bars of fully cured soap of the same design as made in class and a handout with the recipe and instructions for making goats milk soap at home.

Nuno Felted Scarf: Art to Wear

Learn the art of nuno felting! This exciting but simple technique involves applying a thin layer of silk to merino wool using a lamination process with water, a little soap, and gentle agitation. Students will create a colorful, artistic multi textured scarf they can wear year-round! Please note that wet felting can be a physical process. You must feel comfortable with a rolling pin type of motion that is used to meld the fibers together. You can use your hands, fore arms or even feet! The felting is done in 5-minute increments so you can pace yourself. Bring 2 towels and some sharp scissors. (Ages 16+).
